- Our early route from the bridge down to the lighthouse was on a paved B road that meant we made good initial progress. It was interesting seeing the other bank from a different perspective and on our side of the river there were interesting features such as the herd of beautiful red cattle. At one point we passed a group of young fishermen who turned out to be the English National Junior Fishing Team who were practising for the Home Championships to be held that weekend. We passed the time of day with some of the coaches who advised the other Home teams of Scotland, Ireland and Wales were on other rivers somewhere in the local area. The three miles or so to the Sir Peter Scott lighthouse passed very quickly.
- When we started off the skies overhead were grey and grumpy looking but as we walked it cleared up, the sun came out and we were soon walking in considerable heat. By mid-morning the sky was predominantly blue with only some wispy white clouds. The thigh-high vegetation gave way to newly mown grasses that steamed in the morning sun. As the morning moved on my walking companion began to develop signs of allergic reaction to the local herbage, initially with a sore throat and running eyes, later developing difficulty with breathing.
