Once clear of the caravan park the route gradually rises up to the clifftop and in to the hills where it pretty much stays for the remainder of the day. There was a fair bit of climbing at this early juncture as we made height. The walking was difficult at times, the path only as wide as a sheep track and at a funny angle on the hillside, putting a lot of pressure on the ankles. Part of the problem was that because of coastal erosion we were walking on a new path that was just being established by dint of footprint further up the hill from the old one. At various times, lower down the hill we could see the remains of the old path, particularly visible at the sections where it just disappeared over the edge and in to a void.
The high point on this section coming from Llanrhystud is at Penygraig, following which there is a rolling descent back to almost sea level below the farm at Ffos-las. There is no through route on the cliff at this point and the path pushes back up the hill, a climb of about eighty metres, to go round the lower set of buildings at Ffos-las.
On a path going between the buildings we stopped to have lunch, sat beneath a tree for a bit of shelter with a wall at our back for support and to keep the wind off. From our vantage point, we could see that there had been a lot of work done on what we presumed were farm cottages at one time, converted it look like for probable holiday let. The Jetboil provided us with hot coffee and Joanna Elizabeth enjoyed her last 'al'fresco' lunch of this trip. After a day off in Aberystwyth JE heads for home. As we sat there, me thinking of the onward journey, Joanna Elizabeth reflecting on the one just ending, the rain became persistent and heavy, eventually curtailing our rest period.
The bad weather had made it a long and arduous day but for all that it was still enjoyable. Joanna Elizabeth would have liked some sunshine for the last hike of her four-week adventure but it was not to be. For now, we look forward to a day off together in Aberystwyth before we go our separate ways, Joanna Elizabeth to return home to work, while I will continue walking for about another three weeks to complete Wales Coast Path.
