The consenus of opinion appeared to be 'very tough and difficult'. After giving it some thought, we changed our arrangements this morning and agreed with the camp manager to stay for a second night. That meant we could take the 'Poppit Rocket' bus service to the other end of the walk and walk back this way. Two major benefits were that we get to camp two nights in the one place and we can walk with only day packs instead of the usual rucksack. The next day we will repeat the bus trip to Poppit Sands but then walk forward again. A third benefit is that with rain forecast we will not need to pitch in bad weather but rather return to an already established pitch. The drawback to the plan was it meant a late start, only arriving at the start point for walking at 11.30am.
At the road end were delighted to go through Gate Number One of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (but for us the final gate), a hint that we have almost completed the path which we will do tomorrow. Our adventure is longer than that, however, Joanna walking as far as Aberystwyth, while I hope to complete the whole Wales Coast Path on this outing, finishing on The Wirral Peninsula.
There is a climb back out from Ceibwr Bay, going round the shoulder of the hill, walking parallel to a small road for a short distance. Then it is back on to a narrow, mid-cliff, dirt path for the walk along to and the climb up the cliffs at Cell Howel. On the way you pass a couple of natural arches, the one noted to the left of Careg Wylan and the other small cute one at Bwn Bach. As you looked over to the archway the foreground was filled with wild flower colour and scent from yellow Gorse, Seapink and Bluebell.
On the whole, terrain and footing were good, offering some lovely walking over grass and heathland. Above Traeth Bach there is a side walk up to the Iron Age fortification at Castelltreruffydd and below the cliffs at Pwll y Wrach there is a cave feature called 'The Witches Cauldron'. It is a natural tidal pool, formed in the aftermath of the collapse of a sea cave. From this point the second highest climb of the day starts from Traeth Bach and up on to the Cell Howel cliffs.
