Nearby is the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre which includes the history of RAF Pembroke Dock, which included the Royal Air Force Seaplane and Flying Boat station located at the docks. The flying boat centre is based in an old military church and, as well as the RAF history, it contains information on other military, social and cultural endeavours in the town. As yoou drop back down on to the river by Hobbs Point, there is a former gun tower sitting just a few yards off shore. Built in 1851 as part of the defences for the dockyard it is currently on the market (January 2020) with an asking price of £70,000. There are three floors to the building and on the roof you have your own (original) cannon!
Coming off the bridge at Great Honeyborough, we enjoyed a lovely woodland walk back down the line of the Pill to come on to the river fron in the town of Neyland. Ever susceptible to temptation, particularly where Italian restaurants are concerned, we could not resist the lovely aromas emanating from the Neyland Yacht Club restaurant, The Alumchine. You might understand this decision better if you know that on a previous one hundred and eighty-mile section of our coastal walk, over on the East of England, at the end of the section Joanna and I had 'put on' half a stone each. A large part of that was down to three-course Italian lunches every day; the rest can be laid at the door of cream cakes!
At Llanstadwell we passed the lovely little church of St Tudwal. Named after a 6th C Bishop, the church itself is thought to have been built sometime in the 12th C and with a Norman-era tower. On the clifftop the going here was tough, compared to the nice cleared paths at the Angle refinery. After being lulled by a good start, no doubt where lots of locals walk, as we progressed we were met with thick brambles, thigh-high grass and nettles and very uneven ground underfoot. We moved along the cliffs and round Wear Point where it became very interesting with large metal walkways to take us over the myriad pipelines that run down the hillside from the refinery to the jetty on the shore, the added height giving us good views over the river.
