The first day of an adventure, I find, is nearly always a tiring one. The weather generally held up for me remaining bright and sunny for most of the day. However, there was a cold North wind blowing in to me for most of the morning, the whup, whup of it in my ears very irritating when it went on for a long time.
The walking was a mixture of beach and promenade, the latter when the legs had grown tired on the sands. The tide was out at the start at Lytham which resulted in amazing expanses of white sand and blue sky. By Blackpool the tide was near full with the sands fast disappearing. The colour and texture of the sand changes dramatically over the course of the walk, moving from the smooth pristine white of Lytham and Lytham St Anne's to the dirty brown, moon-crater-like surface of Cleveleys.
Blackpool hadn't changed since my last visit there twenty years ago with my mother and the children . Still big and brash, loud and noisy. Not the most beautiful of coastal walks, but different from the run of the mill.
