After our seventeen-miler yesterday we expected the legs and feet to be stiff and sore this morning. Surprisingly, they were not, which we put down to having the sense to take a walk out after dinner last night which served to release the tightness in our limbs.
The day started with a train journey back to Whitehaven, where we finished off yesterday, with path for the day starting from just outside the station. The weather was kind to us again and we walked in brilliant sunshine for most of the day. Occasionally, a little bit of cloud came over but it never lingered for pony.
The walking was a mixed bag of the good, the bad and the ugly. The rural sections of the route, particularly when you are up on the higher hills was just sublime. There was a wonderful mix of wildflowers and wildlife and we were entertained the behaviour of Stonechats and thrilling trilling of many Skylarks. The beach walks were spacious, as well as providing a much needed cool breeze. There is a nice little beach just after coming out of Workington that I is now sadly only populated by windmills. There was some walking on shingle, but it was limited because the tide was going out and we could access long sandy stretches. There was what seems to be the inevitable bit of road walking, albeit on fairly quiet roads. There seems to be ongoing development of the England Coast Path in the area, resulting in some confusion about what route you should / could take.
Catching a train back to St Bees at 5.00pm, we stopped just after the harbour area to cut up to the train station. Any further and we would have been on the wrong side of the river. Despite our exertions of yesterday we finished in good fettle and look forward to our walk tomorrow from Maryport to Silloth.
