Logistically, it was to been a difficult day which resulted in us deciding to split today's walk. First of all the tide was against us which meant we would have to walk some miles on rocky shingle beach. Ineffective were out we would have access to long, sandy stretches. We are based in At Bees, but our walk starts in Seascape which would require a train journey. We hoped to finish in Whitehaven which would have meant a second train journey to return to St Bees. So we cut through all that by walking the St Bees / Whitehaven section first, meaning we tackled, arguably, the toughest section first, St Bees Head (and while still fresh), then caught train to Seascale (the only train journey of the day) to walk back to St beest. Our estimate mileage had been 14, but we're out by three miles.Seventeen miles on the first day of an adventure is not recommended. In part, it was because we were diverted from the path and on to a country road. However, the sun shone all day and we enjoyed some lovely scenery. What is not to like?
