The nearby village of Skinningrove is the location of Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum in which you can see first hand the workings of an ironstone mine. The museum is actually located in some of the structures and tunnel workings of the Loftus Ironstone Mine. One of the claims to fame that Skinningrove steel industry can make is that it produced the materials for the steel that built the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
As well as being the site for alum, the area is also well known as a site for fossils. The area has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the fossils found here as a result of the alum-making activity, which included moving huge quantities of stone.
In Spring I saw you
Your eyes shone like dew
In Summer we shared
A love we had so true
In Autumn they told us
There is nothing we can do
It became Winter when you left.
It was with a greater sense of appreciation for what we have and share that Joanna and I continued on our journey and before too long we were dropping down from the hillside to enter the village of Staithes which was to be our base for the night.
