Also to be found on the hill is Castle Hill Nature Reserve, it is overseen jointly by the local councils (Lewes & Eastbourne) and the voluntary Castle Hill Conservation Group. The reserve is a good place to see wild flowers and there are wonderful views from the summit.
Like so much of this coast, the colour of the water here was beautiful, moving through various shades of silver, cream and a kind of watery, translucent pearly blue. Over to the east we could see the white cliffs that we had walked on yesterday, gleaming in the watery sun. To the west, the outlying houses of Newhaven nestled in a little neuk, just below the lip of the cliffs. We were walking on a wide grassy path, with extensive grasslands to each side of us. Just out of camera view, we could see colourful butterflies or moths flitting over the top of the grasses or disappearing in to them to settle in the sun.
