One of the pools known as the ‘Cardinals Steps’ (for those of you who have read previous entries to the journal, named after Cardinal Beaton of St Andrew’s, he of Gair Bridge fame) greets you just before you reach the village of Anstruther Easter. In its heyday, the pool was said to have had diving boards and changing huts.
Given the importance of fishing on this part of the coast it is no little surprise to find here the remains of so many saltpans and associated factories that would have contributed to the fish processing (See St Monan's below). This lovely old archive film from the Scottish Home Department records the work of the East Coast herring fleet in the early years of the 20th C, as well as the task of the fishwives in gutting the fish it also shows an example of the kippering process.
