And so my Welsh adventure comes to an end with a final walk over the Hawarden Bridge and on to the Wirral Peninsula. It was a funny kind of day as my mind and body played tricks, trying hard to convince me that I am tired when I know that only the psychology had changed. With the end imminent the mind decides no effort is required and the body plays along, refusing to rustle up the requisite energy. After a bit of a talking to, which resulted in some passers-by giving me funny looks, eventually the engine kicked in and I could walk the final fourteen miles at a good pace.
Last night was my last night camping of this adventure and it rained. Oh, how it rained. In the aftermath, all the wee beasties came out to play. It just so happens that I am allergic to most insect bites and stings and I finish the adventure with huge, painful lumps on my legs, neck, chest and torso.
Given that I have walked over six hundred miles, I am in remarkably good fettle. No blisters during the campaign and, apart from a general tiredness at the end of each daily walk, in general, feeling quite chipper. Really the only evidence of my exertions is the amount of food I am putting away. Fortunately, I am blessed with a working and high metabolic rate and I do not easily put on weight.
So, farewell Wales, hello Chester! For now, back home with another adventure to plan. In between a wee Italian holiday and a bit of time backpacking in the Rockies in Canada and visiting old friends from Primary 1. I can hear you and yes, it is nice being a Vagabond.
